If you're using Pleexy to sync tasks between Todoist and Notion, it's important to know how section titles are managed. This guide will walk you through the basics of how Pleexy works with Notion fields as dynamic fields, what happens when you change section names, and how to fix any syncing issues that may come up. Let’s dive in!

How to automatically create sections with Pleexy

When setting up your connection, you can choose to organize your Todoist project(s) into different sections. To do this, just go to the Destination step in your setup and turn on the "Organize your tasks in Todoist sections" option. After that, you can customize how you'd like your sections to be created!

Using Notion fields as dynamic fields

Pleexy makes it super easy to keep your sections organized by supporting certain Notion fields as dynamic fields. This means you can automatically update section titles based on specific task properties in Notion. The fields Pleexy supports as macros include:

  • Status (like Completed or Done)

  • Assignee

  • Priority

For example, if you set up a section in Pleexy titled Section {Status}, the title will automatically change based on the task’s status. So, if your task’s status is "ToDo," Pleexy will sync it as Section ToDo. Cool, right?

What happens when you change Section titles in Notion

Here’s something important to remember: If you rename a synced section in Todoist, Pleexy won’t be able to track it, and all tasks within that section will stop syncing. To keep everything in sync, try to avoid renaming sections unless you're okay with breaking the sync.

Tasks will stop syncing if you move them to a different section

If you move tasks that have already been synced to a specific section into a different one, Pleexy won’t be able to track them and they won't sync anymore.

Example:

If you have a task synced to a section called Section To Do, and move it to Section Paused, Pleexy will lose tracking of that task and it will stop syncing it.

Pleexy doesn't support Notion fields as dynamic fields with "{}" in title

While Pleexy supports dynamic fields, there’s a small limitation to be aware of: Pleexy doesn’t work with Notion fields that have special characters, like curly braces {}, in their names.

Example:

If you name your dynamic field as {Status} in Notion, Pleexy won't be able to read it.

If you change the name of a Notion property that was selected as a dynamic field, Pleexy will rename the section with the name of placeholder

Pleexy matches Notion properties by their exact name. If the name changes in Notion, Pleexy won’t know what to do, so it uses the macro text as-is.

Example:

Let’s say you use Section {Status} as a title, and Pleexy creates a section called Section To Do.

If you rename the “Status” field to "Progress" in Notion, Pleexy will no longer recognize the dynamic field. Instead of updating the section name to match the task’s status, Pleexy will just leave it as Section {Status}, because it won’t find the field anymore.

How to fix this

If you notice your section titles aren’t updating the way you expect, don’t worry! It’s likely because a field name in Notion has changed. Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Go to Pleexy’s settings – Head over to the settings in Pleexy where your Notion sync is set up.

  2. Update the Section title dynamic field – Check if the field name has changed in Notion and update it in Pleexy to reflect the new name.

For example, if you changed "Status" to "Task Status" in Notion, you’ll need to update the dynamic field to {Task Status} in Pleexy.

Best Practices for Syncing Pleexy with Notion

Here are a few quick tips to keep everything running smoothly:

  • Avoid using Notion fields with special characters like {} in your section titles.

  • Be careful when renaming sections in Todoist, as it can stop Pleexy from syncing that section.

  • Be careful when moving tasks in Todoist, as Pleexy will stop syncing that task.

  • If you change any field names in Notion, don’t forget to update them in Pleexy!

By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure your tasks and sections stay organized and Pleexy keeps everything synced between Notion and Todoist.
